Jenyns First School and Nursery

Our Children, Our Future.

French

Intent

At Jenyns, we aim to instil a love of language learning within children, encouraging them to be languages detectives, working to decode new vocabulary. We use Kapow Primary scheme of learning to ensure our children are provided with a content rich, varied and engaging French Curriculum which includes songs, games, and many opportunities to listen and repeat with emphasis on pronunciation practise.

Our topics feature a mixture of speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, language learning strategies and cultural references. Each lesson is supported by our unique teacher videos, demonstrating pronunciation and key teaching techniques for effective language learning.

Implementation

The Kapow French scheme of work is designed with six strands that run throughout:

  • Speaking and pronunciation
  • Listening
  • Reading and writing
  • Grammar
  • Intercultural understanding
  • Language detective skills

Impact

The impact of this curriculum and scheme of work can be monitored continuously through both formative and summative assessment. Guidance and exemplification materials are provided to teachers to support with this process.

The aim is for our pupils to leave our school equipped with a range of language-learning skills to enable them to go onto meet the end of KS2 requirements and study French or other languages as they enter KS3.
