Jenyns First School and Nursery

Our Children, Our Future.

Our Art and Design curriculum aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.  It is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talents and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritable and culture of the British Isles and beyond.

It supports pupils to meet the National curriculum requirements.

We use Kapow Art scheme of work which is designed with five strands that run throughout.

These are:

  • Making skills
  • Formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating

These strands are revisited in every unit to progressively build the children’s’ skills and delivered through a two-year rolling programme.

Our artwork is delivered in a cross-curricular way and linked to our core texts.

Part of the Art curriculum is that the children are involved in the evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make.  By taking part in regular discussions children will be able to talk confidently about their own learning journey and have a growing understanding of how to improve in relations to the learning objectives.

As a result, the expected impact will be that the children will:

  • Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
  • Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
  • Know about great artists.
