Class 1 Hockney

Welcome to Class 1

Our Foundation Stage Class is made up of mixed age Nursery and Reception children. A well planned play-based, creative curriculum is key to our children's learning. Emphasis is placed on active outside learning all year round. Our outside areas have recently been developed to allow for a broad coverage of all curriculum areas. A highlight of the week is 'Wellie Wednesday', when we don our boots and head off to explore the local environment. The small class size ensures that adults are able to work with the children in a relevant and appropriate context that matches the different needs of young children.

Summer Term Curriculum news 2017.

Airport Day in Class 1. We had a whole morning at the airport and flew off to new Zealand. We also have been looking at the life cycle of butterfly's and watched this in class, we let them go on Friday.

Look at our sports day, and fruit and science workshop.

We have been doing measuring and ordering numbers & symmetry. Washing clothes, mud kitchen playing, telling stories in our story telling area. Having fun in music and holding our fantastic chicks.

We have had a great week! We collected data to see ice cream flavours we liked. we then made it into a bar graph and we made the top four flavours. We all enjoyed eating them! We have an incubator with eggs in school and we are watching them hatch!! We also had an excellent Skip2Bfit workshop on Monday.

Our new topic is 'Flight' we have an airport role-play area with an engineers area to fix the planes! Outside we are flying off on holiday so we have a beach shop. We also have been doing so many lovely things in the sunshine and we had a Teddy bear's Picnic in Welly Wednesday.

Look at some of the fun we have had this week! We have been... planting, measuring, writing, programming Bee Bots, making repeating patterns & painting with natural resources from the forest!

We have been really thinking about careful painting this week, also in welly Wednesday we made self-portraits.

Our new topic is 'Forests' we had a WOW day where we made large art with natural materials from the forest. We have a writing forest in our classroom!! We made a forest small world and we also made a large poster about people who help us. Outside we have Percy's Hut! and we are looking at the stories of Percy the park keeper.

Spring 2017 Curriculum News Class 1 - Hockney Class

We have been thinking about our teeth, we had red nose day and in PE we had the climbing equipment out. We have made Easter chicks and learnt about the Easter story, and in welly Wednesday we made faces on the trees!!

For our science week we investigated, playdough science, bubble science, Lava lamp science and bubble science. We learnt about it first with the 'Royal institution of science' then did the experiments ourselves.

We were very lucky to have a visit from a paramedic this week. We also learnt about capacity and had large post it notes to write on!

This week we have had a KidzFit workshop which was great. We have been busy building and making our own town. In Welly Wednesday we made a sounds map and on Wednesday evening we had our camp fire evening. It has also been Science week - photos next week!

We had a visit from a mum and baby this week as we have been learning about how we have changed since we were a baby and all the things we can now do that we couldn't do as a baby. We wrote questions to ask the mum about her baby in literacy.

For World Book Day we dressed up as our favourite book characters.

Our new topic is 'Dens' and in Class 1 we are looking at houses. We have a builders yard and estate agents. We have also made a table and chairs! and have been doing some amazing maths work!

We have been learning about about the season of Winter. We were so pleased it snowed!! We have also been making snow pictures with foam. In maths we learnt about 3D shapes and found them in our junk modelling. Then in Welly Wednesday we did rubbings and we have been enjoying our outside weather station role play area.

On Tuesday we visited a Hindu temple. Look at all the things we did and learnt about, we had a very good day out.

We have had a fantastic week. The nursery made 'listening ears' with Mrs Browne and have been on listening walks around the school and outside. We have made hand print spiders and ladybirds out of clay. In welly Wednesday we made story sticks telling the story of our walk. Also we had a wonderful dance workshop where we danced as animals, we were elephants.

For our topic mini beasts we have been rolling leaves to make a mini beast home,and digging a mini beast trap to encourage mini beasts to come for the smelly food!! We also had a fantastic workshop where we learnt about the Hindu faith. We learnt about it, looked at a sari and decorated hand biscuits as we had learnt about henna decorations on hands.

We have made a lovely Island display and reception children wrote labels for it. One of the highlights of the week was getting a message from visiting Pirates, who had left treasure at school!! We had instructions to draw a map and write labels on it to then plan a route to find the treasure!! We then drew our own treasure maps.

This week we have enjoyed playing in our Pirate shop and hospital. We made cakes in the mud kitchen, had pirate boats in PE, Pirate leaf hats in Welly Wednesday and finished our Birthday display for the classroom.

Our new topic is Islands and class 1 are thinking about Pirates!! Look at all the wonderful things we have been doing in our first week of school.

We had a very good sports day this week, everyone did really well.

We have had a fantastic first week back after half term. We have chicks in school and we were able to hold them and look after them. For our new topic SPLASH we have new role-play areas, one of them is a ticket office where we can buy tickets to go on a canoe and fish for fish with magnets.

On our first week back after the Easter break we were very excited to recieve the 'SpaceSeeds' from Tim Peakes. We filled seed trays ready to plant the space seeds. We also thought about Spring, we painted bird boxes and looked for signs of Spring in Welly Wednesday.

We have had the large climbing frame out in PE, we also have made an 'Underground Animals' display. For our digging topic 'dig' we have loved using metal detectors and digging. In Welly wednesday we made faces in the trees!! They looked so good.

We had a FANTASTIC time on our 'Farm to Fork' trail in Tesco. We learnt about where our food comes from. We tried different cheeses, olives. We held fish and then we were shown around the bakery where we then made rolls. We then looked at fruit and vegtables and tasted different fruits.

We have done so much this week! We have been thinking about length and 3D shapes in maths. We put ourselves in height order and also thought about 3D shapes in junk modelling. We have made a display called 'Can you guess the instrument, and made guitars and wrote about them for a display as well. We had a marching band and have been acting out the story of 'The three billy goats gruff' in our story telling area. It was fantastic when a pantomine came to our school! 'Robin Hood' and we all really enjoyed it.

Today we went on a whole school trip to 'Science Alive' at Harlow, for an engineers workshop! It was really good and we learnt about gravity, friction, forces, air, pressure and lots more!

For 'Enrichment Week' the whole school had a D&T focus, in Class 1 we made a train for our new role-play area, we made clay vehicles, we designed and set up a garage outside, we also designed vehicles on paper and then made them in junk modelling and we also had fun making chololate chip cup cakes. All these ideas were things the children had initiated and we had talked about..
